LIMITED AND NUMBERED FACSIMILE EDITION OF 1,492 COPIES
It was 1960 when Lawrence Herbert was working at a color printing and sales company primarily dedicated to cosmetics. This businessman and great visionary decided to acquire the assets of a company that was $50,000 in debt.
In 1962, Herbert founded Pantone, creating a new formula using 10 pigments to achieve more uniform results and resulting in a 500-color guide. It was immediately successful in companies dedicated to the graphic, industrial, and textile arts; a great example of its usefulness was the Kodak brand, which during the 1950s began to suffer significant losses in the sale of its photographic film because the yellow color in its boxes didn't always share its uniformity, causing people to reject packaging with a darker shade, leading them to believe it wasn't the brand's original or perhaps had expired.
These color guides, so well-known and widely used in the design world, are a must-have that have also managed to make their way into the creative world, varying and playing with increasingly surprising models.
But 300 years before Pantone... what many don't know is that the first Pantone-like guide was created by a Dutch artist . In 1692, A. Boogert wrote a detailed work in which he presented colors and their scales in watercolor, revealing their nuances to the world by mixing them together. More than 900 pages written and painted entirely by hand.
Only one copy of this sensational and advanced volume exists in the Bibliothèque Méjanes in Aix-en-Provence, France. This is because in 1692, printing presses did not yet have the technology necessary to print a treatise of this nature. It would be another hundred years before it could be reproduced with any degree of reliability using lithography.

His facsimile of de Boogert's work is a magnificent addition to my bookshelf, and will be invaluable in my explorations of the way artists perceive and use color.

NEW FACSIMILE EDITION
This 912-page book is a new facsimile edition of A. Boogert's original "Traité des couleurs servant a la peinture a l'eau" (Traité of Colors Servant to Water Painting); a numbered, limited, worldwide edition of 1,492 copies.
In this new facsimile edition, the hand binding is done in Vivella Verde 488 5 and is reproduces the original with the four spine ribs and the original cover design.
The interior is printed on Fedrigoni Arena Rough Natural , a natural white paper with a slight bone tone that imitates and reproduces the papers of the period.
An elegant Royal Blue velvet case, with matte silver dry stamping, which includes, in addition to the original book , a numbered certificate of originality and ten magnificent art prints, also in limited edition, on 300 gram Pioneer paper, so that they can be framed or simply collected.
The book reproduces the original text in the author's native language. Over the more than 900 pages, the artist provides the proportions of pigment and water needed to create each color, along with its tones and shades. To illustrate his explanations, he draws each page with the colors he's discussing. In addition to an index listing and arranging all the colors, Boogert states in the introductory text that the book was created for educational purposes.
With over 900 pages written and painted entirely by hand, "Le Traité des couleurs servant à la peinture à l'eau" was the most comprehensive painting and color guide of its time.
The result was a splendid teaching guide. But the irony is that only one copy existed, which was probably seen by very few people. Had it not been so, it would have served as an indispensable tool for many artists for centuries.
The book is accompanied by a booklet: The Artists of Color, with texts by prestigious artists, art curators, writers, museum directors... on some of the most important painters in history regarding the use of color: Vermeer, Rothko, Basquiat, Sorolla...
An ode to color, to Pantone: the essential color guide in the universe of creativity and design whose use has transcended centuries to remain a fundamental tool in the contemporary era.
* The final retail price will be 220 euros.
